Like the Jedi Knights in Episode 4, the era of 2D, side-scrolling adventures are long past their prime. It is a gaming genre that rarely sees the light of day. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith is far from the “chosen one”; the game that would bring balance err…revive the genre to its former glory. However, the game is surprisingly well done considering it is virtually a clone of the GBA version released recently. Ubi-Soft has added enough to the DS version to give fans of the series enough to hold them off until the feature film releases on Thursday, May 19th.

Presentation
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith opens by first giving the user the option between one of four possible choices. Gamers can either engage in the single player adventure of the game, partake in the special, space based, missions, or can battle their friends wirelessly via multiple cartridge multiplayer. The games title screen presents itself very well. It is entirely intuitive and can easily be manipulated via the touch screen. The game also gives the user the opportunity to completely tailor the control scheme of the game to their heart’s desire. While it is impossible to alter the controls for the basic adventure mode, the game is accessible enough to allow the user to customize the complex controls associated with starship control. Space combat will force the gamer to utilize virtually every button of the Nintendo DS, and the ability to mold the controls to the needs of the player is something which should not be mitigated.

Controlling the many starships of Revenge of the Sith involves acceleration, breaking, firing lasers and missiles, and rolling either left or right. It is easy to get lost amongst the possible actions, but the game’s default control scheme proves to be well suited enough to allow for easy, effective combat amongst the stars. Perhaps the games most effective control implementation comes in the ease of manipulating the 3D camera. By simply pressing both shoulder buttons of the DS simultaneously, the view of the game becomes centered around the user’s spacecraft. It doesn’t sound like much, but the L and R buttons of the DS will quickly become your greatest ally on your effort to fight the Separatists in the galaxy. Ship combat in Revenge of the Sith also brings with it an effective implementation of the touch screen. During a given battle, the player can easily toggle the position of their shields, from front, to middle, to rear, or see the mission objectives or frag information.
