A short demo for the next Pokemon game. Our full hands-on impressions from the GDC show floor.
“When trainers lock eyes, you know it is time to battle.” We could not say it better ourselves as this demo of Pokemon Pearl pits us up against a few trainers. We were given three Pokemon, each level 30 and only a limited time to use them.
The top screen for Pearl is where all the action takes place. Controls are mostly done with the standard d-pad while the touch screen will be used to navigate around menus. This works seamlessly and is a touch when more options are available. With the demo, the only option was to look at your own Pokemon. The bottom screen displayed the time which not only affect the gameplay, but be able to be upgraded with various other options in the future.
For the most part, the game looks like its GBA predecessors with a little more of a 3D look going on. Trees and buildings will stand tall over the sprite characters casting their own shadows. Some special effects are also added to battles which make them more lively by tossing in more colors and objects on the screen. We did wonder why small rubber ducks circled around the Pokemon’s head when it was confused though. Rubber ducks must equal confusion in Japan.
The Poké-fever is back!
The demo itself once again, was very short and we could only fight a few trainers before it ended. It played much like any other Pokemon game, the touch screen featured four option, Bag, Pokemon, Run and Fight which all worked seamlessly during battle. There does not seem to be any tact on touch screen features, only menu manipulation. One thing we did notice during the battle was that the Pokemon cries sounded very similar to those on the original Game Boy version.
Pokemon Pearl is the first Pokemon game made for the DS as well as the first Pokemon game online. It is expected to be released along with the Diamond version next month. With that, we’ll leave you with this,
“This is the end of the demo version. We look forward to seeing you again!”
