AMN's Review Policy: Our reviews are written for you. Our goal is to write honest, to-the-point reviews that don't waste your time. This is why we've split our reviews into four sections: What the Game's About, What's Hot, What's Not and Final Word, so that you can easily find the information you want from our reviews.
What the Game's About
Worms: Open Warfare 2 is the latest offering in the long-running Worms franchise. In each iteration of the franchise, you control a team of warmongering worms (yes, warmongering worms) that have a variety of crazy weapons at their disposal. The game plays out as your worm team is spread out randomly on a 2D level mixed with the worms of an enemy team, either controlled by another human player (WiFi Connection or wireless LAN) or the CPU. You'll use oddball weapons and strategic positioning to eliminate the other team as quickly as possible before they wipe you out. With destroyable environments, wind that affects aiming, and a general sense of unpredictability, you're forced to employ some strategy and plan out each battle. While the pacing can be slow at times, the overall experience of Worms is a hectic and addictive experience.
What's Hot
Worms: Open Warfare 2 is sure to be a favorite for those that enjoy online play or local wireless matches. The game provides a pretty unique experience on the DS, especially for those that are unfamiliar with the Worms franchise. The game is also a vast improvement over the first Worms: Open Warfare title that released on the DS. It's nice to see a deserving franchise not only get a second chance, but to see huge improvements. It's a pretty safe bet that anybody who gives this game a chance is going to find plenty to enjoy between the over the top weapons, the charming characters, the humor, and the endless replay value. The first time you kill another worm with an exploding sheep, you can't help but to crack a smile.
What's Not
It's hard to find many negative things to say, but there are a few classic weapons that are missing that Worms fans might be hoping to see here. The weapon lineup is still impressive, but I can't help but think that it wouldn't have taken much more of an effort to cram a larger cache of weapons into the game. Also, the CPU can at times make some really stupid decisions only to follow it up with a shot that expert players can only dream of making. It doesn't happen a lot, but you will notice it from time to time.
Final Word
It's pretty safe to say that at the end of the year when we look back that Worms: Open Warfare 2 will most likely stand out as one of the finest titles the DS saw all year. While it's easy to miss the game due to its release so close to some other heavy hitters, we hope that DS owners will find a way to give this game a try. The game is another great asset to an already stellar library for the Nintendo DS.
