At Nintendo's Media Summit last week, we talked to the company's Senior Director of Corporate Communications, Charlie Scibetta, about a number of topics, including the competition Apple's iPhone is bringing to the handheld gaming industry. Here's what Scibetta had to say:
Let me just say that it's a great time to be a gamer.
It's a great time to have this kind of choice out there because I feel choice brings innovation, creativity, and competition and all that is good. Anytime you have people out there creating games, you want to up your own game too. We have a very strong hand to play there because we have Mr. Miyamoto who is not a bad guy to have on your side. No matter what device it is you're talking about whether it's the iPhone from Apple or the DS, the DS Lite or the DSi - if you don't have software to power it it's going to be a very cold unfilling experience. If you have great games it's going to come to life and you're going to keep coming back to it again and again.
What we focus on first and foremost is games, the other things like cameras and music are great to have but we really place games first and foremost as our number 1. We like what we have coming out, we have smaller games if you just want to do something for a couple of minutes, we have deep games, we have classic games like the Marios and the Zeldas. As long as we have that as our primary focus I like our chances standing up against anybody because in the end it's all about the content. The games are what Nintendo has always been known for, we have great characters with great appeal, with great history and loyalty. As long as we keep pushing the envelope to make great games we're going to be fine. -- Charlie Scibetta, Senior Director of Corporate Communications for Nintendo of America
We also pointed out the similarities between the DSi and iPhone, such as the camera and apps, and asked if the DSi was in any way a response from Nintendo to the success that Apple's iPhone has enjoyed.
No, the DSi is just a response to us wanting to give gamers the best platform possible to play our games. We've been making games for awhile and competitors have challenged at different times and I think as long as we keep our eye on the prize of making great games, we try not to think about what the competition is doing too much. We're our harshest judges so we kind of just keep on doing what we're doing with games and just go from there. -- Charlie Scibetta
