Two MegaMen, One CoroCoro
August 10, 2009 | 12:17 PM PST

The new issue of CoroCoro is out, and with it comes new information regarding the upcoming MegaMan, or rather, Rockman crossover for Nintendo DS titled "Rockman.EXE: Operate Shooting Star."

So far, the story appears to involve time travel, perhaps thanks to an advanced NetNavi created in the era of Star Force known as ClockMan. It seems that he and the MegaMan of the far future (a fusion between 5th-grader Geo Stelar and alien AM-ian Omega-Xis) somehow manage to travel back in time to the 20XX era of the Game Boy Advance series, MegaMan Battle Network.

As an aside, it seems that ClockMan may be a modified version of the winning entry of the most recent Rockman boss character contest, Clock Genius, but that remains unconfirmed.

The Mega Man Network notes that the game's graphics appear to be lifted directly from the Game Boy Advance games, as the internet areas, pixel art, and the room of MMBN protagonist Lan's neighbor, Mayl, appear to look exactly the same. In fact, the map of the internet is said to be the same as in the first Battle Network game, which fits with the picture of Lan holding a BN1/2-style PET.

Whether this is simply a case of reusing assets to remain cost efficient, or simply the developers' way of making the BN world look "older" is anyone's guess at this point.

Fortunately, there are some new additions; new character portraits will be included for their dialogue, and there will also be a map system included, much as in MegaMan Battle Network 4: Double Team. Plus, word is the game will contain a "slick opening movie."

Unfortunately, this seems to be all of the info available thus far; the battle system has yet been shown, so we don't know if we're in for something closer to the oldschool Battle Network, or the newer Star Force titles. However, MMN adds that "Lan operates SF MegaMan. Operate Shooting Star. Get it!?" Which explains a little of how the old and new might work, at least in a story sense.

Protodude's Rockman Corner reveals that both MegaMen, the Star Force version and MegaMan.EXE, are supposed to be playable.

More updates should be available soon. In the meantime, you can find scans from the new CoroCoro at The Mega Man Network, with some extra close-up images available at Protodude's Rockman Corner. And from the latter, it appears that Geo and Omega-Xis aren't the only SF characters coming back in time.

We'll keep you posted as this develops.
